Review: Acer Aspire 9300-5005

Beat it, desktops. The Aspire 9300 does everything you can do, and it’s portable. Well, just barely. This mammoth is wide enough to accommodate a numeric keypad and has a footprint that dwarfs most airplane tray tables. In exchange for your herniated discs, you get a dual-core processor, 17-inch widescreen, swiveling webcam and other desktop-level hardware. But is it business machine or a media center? Unfortunately, it’s not quite either. Apps like Photoshop take forever to boot up due to insufficient RAM and there’s not enough battery life to watch two full episodes of The Sopranos. Make no mistake: You’re getting a good amount of pop for your thousand bucks. The tough part is deciding which desktop the Aspire’s meant to replace: home or office.
