Review: DeLorme Earthmat GPS PN-20GP

The Earthmate is like a scrappy little sibling — immature, annoying but still likable. The heavy-duty waterproof casing withstood repeated dunkings and sturdy construction made it a joy to dropkick. Proprietary topo maps are easy to read and spot-on for both trails and roads. But the DeLorme is still trapped on the wrong side of 1997 — the unit came with three different CDs, each containing maps for one-third of the country. In order to load these maps, you have to put the included 1-gig SD card into its reader, load the appropriate CD, choose a state, wait forever for it to load, and then jam the SD card back into the GPS. Sheesh.
